The effect of body mass index on one-year functional outcome, quality of life and postoperative complications in total shoulder arthroplasty

The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate the effect BMI on 1-year functional outcome, quality life (QoL) and rate postoperative complications after shoulder arthroplasty. We included 121 patients (59 men 62 women) with primary osteoarthritis (OA) who underwent anatomical or reverse total arthroplasty (TSA rTSA) between 2011 2016. Age, sex, preoperative BMI, medical status using American score anesthesiologists (ASA) class, type prosthesis, outcome Constant EQ-5D as well complication were documented. Patients divided into three groups based their group 1 (normal weight, <25), 2 (overweight, 25-30) 3 (obese, >BMI 30). All comparable regarding age, sex ASA EQ-5D. found significant improvement EQ- 5D at follow-up, regardless (p<0.05). Comparing groups, we no differences among them in score, complications. This showed that did not affect QoL TSA. These results can help physicians make reasonable perioperative expectations planning.
